About

About me.

I'm a multidisciplinary leader with more than twenty years' experience across technology, media and policy. I now lead Responsible AI evaluation at the BBC, and I'm a Visiting Fellow at the University of Reading.

Biography

At the BBC I lead technical work on evaluating AI systems for accuracy, editorial risk and safety. I'm lead author of the BBC/EBU News Integrity in AI Assistants Toolkit, and I lead the joint BBC and EBU work to turn it into an evaluation capability.

I joined the BBC in 2021 at BBC Monitoring, working on the Middle East and North Africa from Arabic, French and English sources. I later helped launch and lead its Data & AI hub as a Senior Journalist.

Before that I spent nearly two decades as an editor and writer. I wrote for The Guardian, openDemocracy and Le Monde diplomatique, worked as an editorial consultant on Al Jazeera English programmes, and edited Ceasefire Magazine, which I founded in 2002.

Alongside the editing I worked as a technical and research consultant on sustainable development, for UN agencies, the World Health Organization, the European Commission and UK government departments. At The Partnering Initiative I wrote the official UN guidance on partnering in Small Island Developing States.

I studied computer science at the University of Nottingham, where I also did doctoral research on data compression. I later returned to the field with an MSc in Data Science and Advanced Computing from Reading, completed with Distinction.
